They Were Just Kids
In 2014, while I was working at the SIAL school in London, I created an educational and photographic project together with Benny and Carol, two amazingly talented photographers.
The project, that was offered both at the SIAL school and at Queensberry nursery in South Kensington, was designed as an awareness campaign.
We featured a gallery of remarkable characters that had a profound impact through their lives and actions, from american aviator Amelia Earhart to Sacagawea, one of the most influential Native American Women, from the scientist Charles Darwin to the playwriter William Shakespeare. All of them before being great were once just little kids!
Childhood is a crucial moment in the flourishing of a human being and we should all work, both as individuals and societies, to protect, enhance and nourish that special “time window” in which future generations are fostered.
In the project we first invited the children to take part in a special history-drama class in which they learned about historical figures through reading and role-play.
After that we created fine-art portraits with the children mimicking historical characters as portraited in famous photographs or paintings.
If you are a teacher or an educator and would love to recreate this project in a new setting please don’t hesitate to contact me.
